A committed and regular yoga practice can increase strength and flexibility, improve balance, breath awareness, and breathing capacity, as well as develop greater focus. Yoga therapy goes a step further by addressing deeper health challenges. Private one-on-one sessions develop an initial practice that then involves regular updates, under the supervision of a certified yoga therapist in the Krishnamacharya tradition.
WHAT CONDITIONS CAN YOGA THERAPY HELP?
Because yoga itself offers tools that touch on the whole spectrum of human experience, yoga therapy can help with a wide range of concerns, among them:
• Pain, including low-back pain, arthritis, pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), and other types of chronic pain such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome
• Neurological Issues and complications of stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease, and traumatic brain injury (TBI)
• Mental Health, including anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, insomnia, and other concerns
• Major Illnesses like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease
• Healthy Aging, including osteoporosis and fall prevention
HOW DOES YOGA THERAPY WORK?
Although yoga has been practiced in some form for many hundred years, we are just beginning to understand these mechanisms from a Western scientific perspective. A tool applied in one area—say, a breathing practice (pranayama)—can profoundly affect a completely different area of the body or mind. For example, a yoga therapist might teach a student a specific type of pranayama to address their chronic asthma; if the student practices that exercise regularly, long-time anxiety may also ease, or habitual neck tension may disappear.
Researchers think this works partly because of yoga’s ability to regulate the nervous system and possibly affect the way the brain processes information. Another reason yoga therapy may work so well is that it's not a treatment done to a person. Instead, yoga therapists aim to empower their students to tap into their own innate healing capabilities, tools for improved health and well-being that can be used throughout a lifetime!
